Since the beginning, the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations of University of São Paulo had a full cooperation of a multidisciplinary team to be developed and implemented. The team researched similar initiatives and related projects to get a strong theoretical starting ground.

During this survey, the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) was found, the consortium of several institutions which together proposed an interface for the end-user and the Resarch & Development of our Digital Library. The NDLTD offered all the support needed for the development and the implementation of our new Digital Library.

As member of the NDLTD, USP had the access and the right of use to the package developed by Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) for the management and storage of Electronic Thesis and Dissertatinos (ETD). This package uses only open source softwares.

The package was adapted for the University's environment, merging with the Postgraduation Administrative System and with the DEDALUS system (USP Catalogue), mantained by Integrated Libraries System (Sistema Integrado de Bibliotecas - SIBi). This adaptation also involves technological updates of the database and the implementation language.

Since 2003, USP is part of the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações) maintained by the Brazilian Institute of Information Science and Technology (Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia - IBICT), owned by the Ministry of Science and Technology, exporting theses and dissertations' metadata.
